Grandmothers' Project

In August 2008 a group of women from Bourne End in Buckinghamshire joined with the local South African village grandmothers. Together they set up the Gogos [grandmothers] Support Group. This project is helping grandmothers to deal with the difficult social and financial issues of bringing up children whose parents have died from illnesses associated with HIV/AIDS.

Since 2008, the Bourne End Gogos have raised nearly £2,000 which has gone directly to help Gogos in the Keiskamma Trust villages of Hamburg Bodiam and Ntilini, and two nearby villages, Cross Roads and Lover’s Twist.

The money has been used to start up income generation programmes including raising and selling chickens, organic gardening and sewing.  The Gogos have also received education and psychosocial support from the Keiskamma project.
