On July 20th
Mr. Sakhumzi Somyo, the Mayor of the Amathola District, Eastern Cape,
visited the village of Hamburg. He came to attend a meeting to present
his office’s plan to develop Hamburg into an Artists’ Center.
If this
plan becomes reality the area would attract artists of all disciplines
from all parts of the world. It would increase public awareness of the
work of The Keiskamma Art Project and enhance the social circumstances
of the community as a whole.
During
the meeting, the Mayor announced that he had seen an exhibition of work
by the people of The Keiskamma Art Project when visiting Oxford in the
United Kingdom. He went on to say how proud he felt to see the work of
people from his own area being exhibited internationally.
