Tapestry in Parliament

The National Standard Bank of South Africa has purchased the Keiskamma History Tapestry, and loaned it to be exhibited for an extended period in the Parliament in Cape Town. The Tapestry was unveiled on 8 March 2006 by the Speaker of Parliament, and it is displayed in the Old Assembly in three spaces, the entrance, the lobby and the outside walls of the chamber.

The unveiling of the Tapestry was celebrated with a lunch attended by members of Parliament, the Standard Bank and the Keiskamma Art Project, who were flown to Cape Town for the occasion. Many of these women and men had never been to Cape Town, let alone travelled by air.

Parliament has declared the Keiskamma History Tapestry to be an artwork illustrating the people’s vision. It is a remarkable achievement and would not have been possible without support given by the Keiskamma Friends, whose names have been embroidered on the Tapestry alongside those of the women and men who created the work.
