In
general the concept of toys for pleasure is rare in Xhosa childhood.
From a very early age play is experienced at their parent’s
side in learning how to prepare for life and survival. Story telling
however is a worldwide custom and tales of folklore, magic and history
are told to children in much the same way it is to any child anywhere.
The first 'for
sale' toy/novelty produced by the Xhosa women of the Keiskamma Art
Project was of course the cow. It is made from colourful felt with
beaded body decorations and wire beaded horns. These are very popular
keepsakes from visits to the project studio in South Africa or from
visits to the web site.
