Xhosa
people are in general finders and collectors The method of decoration/embroidery
in its traditional form reflects this. Their use of beads buttons
and black bootlace on white fabric is very distinctive and evocative
of the Ciskei and Transkei people.
The Keiskamma
women have chosen to use cows as the thread and theme, winding throughout
their work. The aim is to bring cattle back into the Xhosa women’s
world through stitch. See an article in 'Encounter South Africa'
for the story of Nongqawuse, the Xhosa woman who almost brought
down the Xhosa nation here.
For the gallery
the women have produced a range of soft furnishing items with variable
references to their pride in the Nguni cattle. Traditional Xhosa
design, sometimes incorporated with modern designs, are sewn on
cotton linen and hessian.
